Committee Report – October 2019

Another season is here! Congratulations to everyone on a great pre-season, the effort you have put in thus far. The season from all reports kicked off really well and that’s credit to you.

With our first General Meeting around the corner, we have our first committee update for you.

President’s Report

Here is the latest from our President, Trent Steenholdt (president@wacua.asn.au)

  • Pay rates – This Season we’ve had yet another increase in our pay rates thanks to a much tighter working relationship with the WACA. Much of this can be attributed to the transparent process that’s outlined in the Memorandum of Understanding. The pay rates for season were available in the WACA Umpires Handbook that was handed out at the Season launch event.
  • Registration process – This Season saw our registration process change slightly for the WA Premier Cricket Registration Fee. The joint form has made our administration a lot easier, giving us more time to focus on things that are important to us. We appreciate that not everyone was convinced this registration would be a success, but it’s pleasing to know that our membership numbers are very much on par with what they were last season.
  • Merchandise – All merchandise ordered before 19 September is ready for pick up at our first General Meeting. We’ve had some fun with the wrong colours being ordered, thankfully a vendor error. This season we’ll have just Shirts, Jackets and Caps. Bags while very popular and all sold are only a once every couple of seasons item.
  • Sponsorship – This Season we’ve had a change of our major sponsor. Firstly I want to thank Mick Martell and the Perth Metro Property Group team for saving our bacon the last decade. We owe many thanks to them for our existence today, mainly when merchandise was the only source of income that was keeping us relevant. This season we’re welcoming the Match Official System (by Cortana Design) to be our major sponsor, contributing $1000 into our bank account. Not a great deal changes operationally for the WACUA with the change in sponsor, except new merchandise does have the MOS logo. All merchandise matches the same design as last season, so there is no need to update your Perth Metro Property Group kit. If anything, we still want you to wear Mick’s gear with a lot of pride!
  • Events Calendar – The events calendar at www.wacua.asn.au/events has been populated with all our events. Please make sure to book out your own calendars for events that you’re entitled to come to for free like the Annual Season Dinner (4 April 2020).
  • Hat bands – There has been much excitement around the WA Premier Cricket hat bands and them being embroidered with the Senior Men’s First Grade numbers. The hat bands are an excellent joint initiative from us and the WACA, and we’re very grateful for Alan Johanson and his team for allowing us to have a small part of the on-field merchandise. Currently, hatbands are only available to active Premier Cricket umpires, and while I appreciate that will frustrate a few, this is purely a logistical decision. The hatband is, after all, a WACA item that they ordered which we then took to our embroiderer to get done. Only enough hatbands were ordered for actively umpires and with us Life Members (as a gesture of their service to us).
  • Plans for this Season – The Season ahead will be a busy one for us. We’re looking to take our social events to the next level and build our close working relationship with the WACA. The benefits of which we already see with things like the hat bands and financial backing.

Treasurer’s Report

Here is the latest from our Treasurer, Andrew Micenko (treasurer@wacua.asn.au)

Hello everyone, and welcome to the new season! I hope everyone enjoyed the opening round.

We kicked off the season with our first event back in August, which was the post-seminar food and drinks at the Grosvenor Hotel. It was great being able to chat with Simon Fry well into the evening! Turnout was a bit better than expected which resulted in us making the executive decision on the night to increase the budget for the event from $300 to $500. It was good to see so many people there!

Once again the plan for the overall budget is to spend a bit of the cash reserves that we have, dropping from the $15721.57 that we started the financial year at to $14775.57. This is the plan only at this stage, and is liable to change. If there are any concerns with this please feel free to come and talk to me, or raise it at our general meeting.

Finally, I will be paying for the merchandise order this week, so there will be a drop in our current balance. I’d ask anyone who’s ordered merchandise to pay for it ASAP. Thanks!

Here are the current numbers:
Start of the association’s financial year: $15,721.57
Current balance: $16,132.19 ($1,749.62 in the everyday account, $14,182.57 in the savings account, $200 in cash)
