Committee Report – October 2020

Another season is here! Congratulations to umpires starting this season while still in the unusual circumstance that is COVID-19. I think from all reports we’ve handled it very well!

With our first General Meeting around the corner, we have our first committee update for you.

President’s Report

Here is the latest from our President, Trent Steenholdt (president@wacua.asn.au)

  • Annual Dinner 2019-20 – Thank you to everyone that attended the belated Annual Season Dinner for 2019-20 in September. We finally had it! Hehe! From the general feedback I have received, it sounds like everyone enjoyed the evening and the toughest quiz questions known to man. I want to thank the previous and current committees, in particular Ashlee, Ernest, Ahmad, Sean and Andrew for their work on this. You all made this a great evening.
  • Annual Reports – At the Annual General Meeting, we had an incomplete version of the Season 2019-20 available online. Now with all the awards given, we will create a second revision of the Annual Report and fix some issues that people reported. Expect an updated version by the end of October/ start of November.
  • Pay rates – This Season pay rates are consistent with last season. While the WACUA did ask for a slight increase in December 2019, the COVID-19 pandemic made it very difficult to endorse an increase when sources of income for the WACA, like the Test Match were being cancelled.

I am happy to report though, as part of our updated MOU, match day cancellations from the 12:00 am (same day) are paid out in full. So if your match is abandoned on the morning of the day, you will be paid for your troubles planning your day around cricket!
  • Registration process – This Season saw our registration process change slightly for the WA Premier Cricket Registration Fee. The joint form has made our administration a lot easier, giving us more time to focus on things that are important to us. We appreciate that not everyone was convinced this registration would be a success, but it’s pleasing to know that our membership numbers are very much on par with what they were last season.
  • Merchandise – All merchandise ordered before 19 September should be ready in the next 24 to 48 hours (Tuesday, 13th October) and those paid for postage should get their items in the next few days. We, unfortunately, had a yet another disaster with Ace Promotions which ultimately has meant we switched providers very late in the order process. The good news is the new supplier has an excellent reputation and are very quick with their turn around times.
  • Sponsorship – This season we’re welcome back the Match Official System (by Cortana Design) to be our major sponsor, contributing $1000 into our bank account at Christmas time. We’re also currently working with MTA Travel (Nathan Johnstone) and the Bank of Queensland to seek additional sponsorship for this season and beyond.
  • Events Calendar – The events calendar at www.wacua.asn.au/events has been populated with all our events. We’ve already had one successful Back to Base Drinks, and we’ll have plenty more during the season so keep your eyes open.
  • Plans for this Season – The Season ahead will be one for providing normality in what is a crazy world at the moment. Memberships look very strong in terms of the ratio of active umpires at this stage, and we will continue to support the WACA in whatever way we can to help with recruitment and enticing more umpires to Umpire in Premier Cricket. With bio-hub matches likely for domestic and international cricket, it’s nice to know that local cricket remains relatively normal in these unusual times.

Treasurer’s Report

Here is the latest from our Treasurer, Andrew Micenko (treasurer@wacua.asn.au)

Hi everyone, and welcome to the new season! I’ve created a rough budget for season 2020/2021, and invite you all to take a look below.

Since the AGM, our main spending has been on last season’s dinner, where we outlaid $2513.72 for the evening. We’re still planning on having an end of season dinner towards the end of this cricket season. The two dinners combined are the reason we’re forecasting a $3570 loss this financial year. Even with this loss, we should still remain above our target of $15000 in the bank.

On top of the preseason dinner, we’ve also had some money spent on merchandise, the seminar social drinks and our first back-to-base for the season. Merchandise payments have been coming in directly, which is great!

As normal, we won’t see the majority of membership fees until the WACA’s December pay run. This leaves our current balances at:
Cheque account – $1848.22
Savings account – $14371.90
Cash – $213.00
Total – $16433.12

You can download the full report here.

Thanks!
Andrew Micenko
