Committee Report – December 2019

Special thanks to our Major Sponsor, the Match Official System

President’s Report

Here is the latest from our President, Trent Steenholdt (president@wacua.asn.au)

  • Life Members Luncheon – Thank you to everyone that RSVP’d for the luncheon. This year was unique with Perth hosting its first day-night test match so the format may be a little different again this year. If you have any suggestions on how to improve this, please contact the committee at secretary@wacua.asn.au.
  • Pay rates for next season – The pay rates for Season 2020-21 have been submitted to the WACA and have been accepted. They are subject to budgetary approval but the proposed rates would be:
  • T20 Match – The T20 Match is still on and is scheduled for Saturday 28th December 2019, subject to ground availability. This year we’re hoping to play on Turf at Kent Street Senior High School thanks again to my father, Val Steenholdt who is the curator. More information about this will come out separately from our committee reports so keep your eyes open for it!
  • MOU for Season 2020-21 – The Committee met with Alan Johanson and Daniel Gibbons for a very productive discussion about the MOU and how we would like to collaborate next season. Some of the items on the table are:
    • Wording and grammatical fixes.
    • Refinement of the registration process for WA Premier Cricket when an umpire is a WACUA Life Member.
    • Annual Season Dinner arrangements, including discussions for this years event including a great suggestion from Wayne Barron with awarding grand final umpire medals on the evening of Dinner rather than at the end of the days play.
    • Co-branding for off-field uniforms.
    • WACA’s suggested changes of on-field uniform apparel

The MOU for Season 2019/20 remain unchanged of course. Stay tuned for more news about the MOU for Season 2020/21.
  • Events Calendar – The events calendar at www.wacua.asn.au/events has been populated with all our events. Please make sure to book out your own calendars for events that you’re entitled to come to for free like the Annual Season Dinner (4 April 2020).

Treasurer’s Report

Here is the latest from our Treasurer, Andrew Micenko (treasurer@wacua.asn.au)

Hello everyone, it’ll be a short report from me this time. Not a great deal has changed since our last meeting. We’ve paid Ace Promotions for the latest batch of merchandise (this payment happened on the same day as our last meeting), so it’d be great if everyone who’s ordered could get their money in ASAP.

We’ve also held the first back to base event at Fletcher Park where we put on drinks and a BBQ.

Finally, thanks to Cortana Design for $1000 in sponsorship money! Some of you already have the MOS branded WACUA polos.

At the last meeting there were some questions around the budget and where the association’s money is being spent. I’ve added the budget below for full disclosure. Please note that this is an approximation only and things may change. I’ve been adjusting some of the figures as we go along and gain a better understanding of what we need. I’ve also attached the finances for the financial year as they currently are and I will be doing this each report this season.

That’s all from me – thanks for reading!

Andrew

Committee Report – October 2019

Another season is here! Congratulations to everyone on a great pre-season, the effort you have put in thus far. The season from all reports kicked off really well and that’s credit to you.

With our first General Meeting around the corner, we have our first committee update for you.

President’s Report

Here is the latest from our President, Trent Steenholdt (president@wacua.asn.au)

  • Pay rates – This Season we’ve had yet another increase in our pay rates thanks to a much tighter working relationship with the WACA. Much of this can be attributed to the transparent process that’s outlined in the Memorandum of Understanding. The pay rates for season were available in the WACA Umpires Handbook that was handed out at the Season launch event.
  • Registration process – This Season saw our registration process change slightly for the WA Premier Cricket Registration Fee. The joint form has made our administration a lot easier, giving us more time to focus on things that are important to us. We appreciate that not everyone was convinced this registration would be a success, but it’s pleasing to know that our membership numbers are very much on par with what they were last season.
  • Merchandise – All merchandise ordered before 19 September is ready for pick up at our first General Meeting. We’ve had some fun with the wrong colours being ordered, thankfully a vendor error. This season we’ll have just Shirts, Jackets and Caps. Bags while very popular and all sold are only a once every couple of seasons item.
  • Sponsorship – This Season we’ve had a change of our major sponsor. Firstly I want to thank Mick Martell and the Perth Metro Property Group team for saving our bacon the last decade. We owe many thanks to them for our existence today, mainly when merchandise was the only source of income that was keeping us relevant. This season we’re welcoming the Match Official System (by Cortana Design) to be our major sponsor, contributing $1000 into our bank account. Not a great deal changes operationally for the WACUA with the change in sponsor, except new merchandise does have the MOS logo. All merchandise matches the same design as last season, so there is no need to update your Perth Metro Property Group kit. If anything, we still want you to wear Mick’s gear with a lot of pride!
  • Events Calendar – The events calendar at www.wacua.asn.au/events has been populated with all our events. Please make sure to book out your own calendars for events that you’re entitled to come to for free like the Annual Season Dinner (4 April 2020).
  • Hat bands – There has been much excitement around the WA Premier Cricket hat bands and them being embroidered with the Senior Men’s First Grade numbers. The hat bands are an excellent joint initiative from us and the WACA, and we’re very grateful for Alan Johanson and his team for allowing us to have a small part of the on-field merchandise. Currently, hatbands are only available to active Premier Cricket umpires, and while I appreciate that will frustrate a few, this is purely a logistical decision. The hatband is, after all, a WACA item that they ordered which we then took to our embroiderer to get done. Only enough hatbands were ordered for actively umpires and with us Life Members (as a gesture of their service to us).
  • Plans for this Season – The Season ahead will be a busy one for us. We’re looking to take our social events to the next level and build our close working relationship with the WACA. The benefits of which we already see with things like the hat bands and financial backing.

Treasurer’s Report

Here is the latest from our Treasurer, Andrew Micenko (treasurer@wacua.asn.au)

Hello everyone, and welcome to the new season! I hope everyone enjoyed the opening round.

We kicked off the season with our first event back in August, which was the post-seminar food and drinks at the Grosvenor Hotel. It was great being able to chat with Simon Fry well into the evening! Turnout was a bit better than expected which resulted in us making the executive decision on the night to increase the budget for the event from $300 to $500. It was good to see so many people there!

Once again the plan for the overall budget is to spend a bit of the cash reserves that we have, dropping from the $15721.57 that we started the financial year at to $14775.57. This is the plan only at this stage, and is liable to change. If there are any concerns with this please feel free to come and talk to me, or raise it at our general meeting.

Finally, I will be paying for the merchandise order this week, so there will be a drop in our current balance. I’d ask anyone who’s ordered merchandise to pay for it ASAP. Thanks!

Here are the current numbers:
Start of the association’s financial year: $15,721.57
Current balance: $16,132.19 ($1,749.62 in the everyday account, $14,182.57 in the savings account, $200 in cash)

Update for all members – 30.09.2019

  • Additional Merchandise available at WACA Seminar Launch event – Additional shirts and jackets of limited sizes and five (5) bags will be available tomorrow night for purchase. Please bring exact amount in cash for these items to take home tomorrow night. We won’t have change and no IOU’s will be allowed.
  • WACUA Shirts – $35
  • WACUA Jacket – $50
  • WACUA Bag – $75
  • WACUA Notebook cover – Free! (1 per member only)

Update for all members – 28.09.2019

  • Numbered hat bands (1st Grade) – They will be handed out at the WACA Season Launch, October 1st. If you do not attend, your next chance will be at our first general meeting. We wont be giving hat bands to others to give to you; we lose things far too often this way.
  • Merchandise – Shirts and Jackets (not Caps) ordered prior to September 19th will be available at the WACA Season Launch, October 1st. Please pay EFT before this date for funds to settle in our account. If paying cash, please have exact amount on the evening if you want to collect. Again no one will be able to pick up the merchandise on your behalf.
  • First Back-to-Base Drinks – On our website, we advertised the first back-to-base drinks would be after Round 1. We’ve now pushed this back a bit October 19th. Venue TBC. 😀
  • First WACUA General Meeting – People keep asking, but our first meeting is not until October 15th. Please keep checking www.wacua.asn.au/events for when we have our meetings etc.

Treasurer’s Report

Hi everyone,
We’re getting to the pointy end of the season now! As such, our two big events are just around the corner! The grand final breakfast will be at Mantra on Hay this year and they always have a great buffet menu, so please get your RSVPs and payments ($25.00) in as soon as possible.

Our annual dinner is also coming up, and this has a pretty big cost associated with it so we need everyone to get involved and purchase tickets. It’s going to be a great event so don’t miss out.

One event that we recently subsidised that wasn’t originally budgeted for was drinks at the opening of the Test Umpires’ Walk at the WACA. This came to $467.

Here are our current balances (correct at time of writing):
Cheque account: $7 652.65
Savings account: $10 039.39
Cash: $0.00
Total: $17 692.04

I know some keen-eyed umpires will notice that this amount is slightly less than what we had at the start of the season. With the two big costs still to come, it’s looking like we’re going to end up a few thousand dollars down for the season.

Thanks,
Andrew Micenko

The WACUA as whole are very grateful for the WACA works in making sure some of WA’s most respected umpires are never forgotten!

Treasurer’s Report

Hello everyone,
I’d like to give you a very quick update this time. Since last meeting we’ve had a few usual social expenses (BBQ, drinks). We’ve also paid the deposit for our annual dinner which was $1500. We will have to pay the remainder of the balance a week before the event itself. In order to cover this and other costs that will come up before then, I’ve moved $4000 from our savings account to our everyday account. This may be overkill, so I’ll see how much comes in from ticket sales (hint, hint) and probably transfer some of it back into savings if cash flow is OK.

Here are our current balances (correct at time of writing):
Cheque account: $7918.45
Savings account: $10019.83
Cash: $82
Total: $18020.28

Thanks!

President’s Report

Good day everyone,

I hope you have had a great festive season and wishing you a great 2019!

At our last general meeting in December we talked about and voted on the MOU! While I’ll talk about the MOU itself a bit later on, it was really disappointing to see that many on the night were surprised we were even talking about the MOU let alone voting on it! In a nutshell, the committee use these Committee Reports (website version this season and the PDF season prior) to keep you informed of the WACUA’s important news, issues and announcements. This is our critical communication channel to you so it’s vitally important that those who want to have their say come prepared with the information already shared.

If you do have a spare hour and you haven’t read these reports, I highly recommend that you read not only this one but the ones prior as I’m sure they will answer a question you probably have! A great example of this is those wanting to know about pay rates for this season or how to collect the merchandise you haven’t got yet!

On a completely different topic, I want to just call out that during our ‘break’ we had our Social T20 match. From the verbal feedback I’ve received I believe this event was a great success and I thank everyone who came down and played or watched. Also thank you to my old man Val and the East Fremantle Cricket Club for hosting the event. I believe this will be a regular event on our calendar. If you were there and have some suggestions to make the day better, let us know at secretary@wacua.asn.au.

Here is the latest news and announcements:

  • Back to base drinks 2.0: We’re having another back to base Saturday drinks which is where we put on a bar tab after a days play on Saturday. We’ll announce it at our next general meeting (January 15th) so make sure you’re there to find out more about this!
  • Collection of Merchandise: A friendly reminder that those who haven’t got their shirt(s), jacket or bag yet can get these at our General Meetings. Earlier this season (October and November) we offered pick up arrangements elsewhere (my place in Melville) but for the sake of simplicity, and avoiding unnecessary confusion where I was wasting evenings waiting for people who didn’t show we’re now only offering the general meetings as a collection point. If this does not work for you, please contact me at president@wacua.asn.au. If you do plan to email me because you cannot make it to any of the meetings for the rest of the season, as a courtesy to me please don’t make the arrangement for collection/drop off on your own… This has sadly happened a couple of times now and it’s not only rude (well I think it is anyway) but I tend to disappoint when someone expects me to be there with their merchandise and I’m at my in-laws having dinner (this happened last month)!
  • Memorandum of Understanding:

As mentioned earlier, we’ve got the Memorandum of Understanding with the WACA up for debate at the moment. The committee last season and this season has worked really hard to get this document together with the WACA as we strongly believe it safe guards some of the key arrangements we have with them that have currently been implemented with no more than a handshake deal. Examples being our ability to negotiate pay rates, the WACA membership incentive program, the WACA supporting the Olly Cooley Medal night, our subsidies for Olly Cooley Medal night tickets, our lump sum payment from the WACA for a WACA hosted event (Grand Final Breakfast), the WACUA membership fee deduction process and our ability to wear WACUA merchandise to grounds on the weekend. All of these at present are not written or signed upon so we’re really lucky that there is a level of trust and more importantly faith that each party does the right thing by each other.

The MOU is there to put in black and white those ‘handshake’ deals and also provide some very important benefits to members. To list a few:

  • Increase from $1000 lump sum contribution from the WACA to $1500 for the WACA hosted event.
  • Ability for umpires to ‘pause’ their years of service criteria requirement for WACA membership. I.e. Umpires can have a season off due to circumstances like illness, family issues, pregnancy and so on without losing their WACA membership during that period.
  • Guaranteed ability for the WACUA committee each season to negotiate better pay rates for the following season.
  • Guaranteed payments for games abandoned on the morning of a match but also the ability to retain the better pay-rate if you’re reappointed elsewhere.
  • More control to members to pick on-field merchandise they want. E.g. Obtain a white jacket instead of a shirt if you have one already.
  • Ability for the WACUA committee to contribute on matters like the Umpires Handbook, Premier Cricket Policies and Procedures.
  • Support members in potential grievances with the WACA having proper procedures and guidance to raise such matters with them.

The last aspect I want to touch on is the WA Premier Cricket Registration fee. First and foremost the feedback from last general meeting was there were some that were unhappy with the word ‘consult’ and wanted that to be ‘agree’ when it comes to both parties setting the registration fee figure. I’m happy to report that both parties talked about this and the word has now been changed. Rest assured it was always going to be a mutual agreement between both parties on what that figure would be. Secondly for those who seem to be really worried about this, the registration fee should be seen as nothing more than combining all the current outlying costs you pay to umpire into one fee. I.e. Payments for the Seminar Weekend, your WACUA membership as well as other training and development opportunities like guest speakers, more umpire observers and credit available to buy merchandise would be part of the registration fee. This fee is based off of returning the investment to you!

The fee would be in the range of approximately $90 to $150, confirmed at our AGM meeting each season. That figure includes the current $55 WACUA membership fee. Both parties will obviously meet before this time and flesh out in full what the fee will be and will clearly state what you get from this fee so there are no surprises what you’re expected to pay to officiate in Season 2019-20. Obviously we cannot share this all with you right now as Daniel needs a few more weeks in his new role to flesh out what he would like to do with umpiring next season.

The WACUA committee wholeheartedly support the MOU and the introduction of the WA Premier Cricket Registration Fee as we see this only benefiting our members. That being said we fully appreciate that some may not be convinced of this so for the January meeting we’ll only debate the item (obtain more feedback) and vote on it at a later meeting, depending on the feedback received.

For the latest MOU, see the link below.

For a WA sports comparison, Football West referees are expected to pay $400 to officiate in the State League competition.

That’s it from me. Hope the second half of the season is a great one for you!

Cheers,

Treasurer’s Report

Hi everyone, I hope you’ve all had a chance to enjoy the time off over Christmas and New Year. I started off my umpiring in 2019 with Wayne Barron in his 200th game! We were able to ease in to this year with a one-day game that only lasted 41 overs!

The main expenses for the last month were the December general meeting (bar tab/raffle prizes/BBQ) and the T20 game ($550 for bar tab and BBQ). In terms of money coming in, we’ve now received payment from the WACA for everyone who opted in to having their WACUA membership fee deducted from their match payments. I’ve noticed that three people have paid twice – I’ll be getting in touch to try and organise a refund. There are also several people who have not yet umpired, so the WACA was unable to pay their membership fees for them. Likewise, we’ll be in touch with these people.

Here are our current balances (correct at time of writing):
Cheque account: $5632.62
Savings account: $13993.69
Cash: $0.00 (yay, I got to the bank!)
Total: $19,626.31

Happy 2019!

President’s Report

Well, it’s already the half way point! Actually I’m lying when I type that because I’m actually writing this report before I go to the Under 19’s Male National Championships this year so it’s still November. That being said I’ll likely update little bits here and there before it goes out with the one week notice in December so it will still all be relevant!

Before I get into it, I want to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Just because I’m worried once again my committee report will be too long and you wont see my well wishes! Hehe. Seriously though, spend the occasion with your loving family and friends, cherish the moments that this time of year tends to create and go into 2019 with a positive and happy vibe. I know that this is will be exactly I’ll be doing while eating as many fruit mince pies I can get my hands on!

Here is the latest news and announcements:

  • T20 Game: The T20 is on December 29th at 2pm (game start). Please be at the ground 1 hour before…. kidding, you’re not umpiring so just get there 5 minutes before but be ready to fetch some balls in the Swan River as you’ll likely be fielding down there because, you know, you were late! Cricket gear is available so you don’t need your own. We’ll have a BBQ going and the Bar (with tab) will also be open Please wear your WACUA Polo shirt! RSVP now at https://www.wacua.asn.au/event/t20-game/
  • Memorandum of Understanding: With Daniel taking on the role as Match Officials Manager we’ve seen some great progress with the MOU and both parties are now overall happy with its content. This has been a grind but we’re really thankful to the WACA for allowing us to negotiate what both parties believe is a fair agreement now. With that in mind, the Committee is sharing the document now so that we can vote on enacting it for season 2019-20.
  • Pay rates: Season 2019/20 pay rates need to be presented to the WACA before December 31st this year so the Committee has already put together the proposed pay rates. Most game formats under the proposed structure will receive a $10 increase while a small number of games will just get a $5 increase. U15/U17 grand finals are a big beneficiary of our payment balancing system and will see a $15 increase. These pay rates are just proposed and need to be approved by the WACA and its board which we believe they will. Rest assured that unlike this season where we needed to fix some of imbalances that crept in over the years no game format is worse off next season!
  • WACA weekly email out: In providing a consistent communication strategy for all umpires we’ll be contributing to the WACA’s email out that Daniel is putting together. Make sure you keep your eye out for them to see all the latest news, events and umpiring milestones from the association!

With the December General Meeting happening on 18th, we’ll have bigger and better raffle prizes, a much larger bar tab and hopefully have the ICC Test Match umpires join us. This meeting should be a great one so don’t miss it!

Kudos finally to those who are reading this… I should do a joke here to see how many people will come up to me at the meeting and be like, “don’t quit the day job and become a comedian”. Hehe. Okay here it goes anyways:

What is the difference between Cinderella and the Aussies? Cinderella knew when to leave the ball.

Thanks everyone! Have a Merry Christmas, and a blessed New Year!
